About the position

The Serving Cook position is responsible for preparing and serving meals to students and staff in a school setting, ensuring that food is presented attractively and meets nutritional standards. The role includes setting up serving areas, maintaining cleanliness in the kitchen, and guiding the work of Child Nutrition helpers. This position plays a crucial role in supporting the educational achievement of students through proper nutrition.

Responsibilities

• Sets up serving carts and warming ovens for meals.
• Fills condiment containers and sets up utensils, napkins, and trays.
• Prepares, pans, and heats food while maintaining appropriate temperatures.
• Serves meals to students and staff, ensuring appropriate quantities and attractive presentation.
• Cleans and wipes down serving and meal areas between breakfast and lunch.
• Guides the work of Child Nutrition helpers and assists in food handling procedures.
• Cleans serving carts, tables, and other food areas after meal periods.
• Cleans refrigerators, storage areas, grills, and other kitchen equipment regularly.
• Prepares a list of next day's food and supply orders.
• Collects and launders kitchen linen and other items as needed.
• May perform cashier duties as needed.
• May serve on district committees and models cooperative behavior.

Requirements

• Education and experience necessary to carry out the assignment.
• Experience serving food is desirable.
• Experience working with school-age children is desirable.
• SNA (State Nutrition Association) certification required.
• Valid Washington state food handler's permit required.

Nice-to-haves

• Knowledge of proper food handling techniques.
• Knowledge of food service safety and sanitation.
• Ability to meet offer vs. serve meal pattern requirements.
