About the position

The Admissions Counselor for Returning Students at Cal Poly Pomona plays a crucial role in guiding prospective students through the admissions process, particularly focusing on returning and transfer students. This position involves advising students on eligibility, application processes, and providing comprehensive support throughout their journey to re-admission. The counselor will also engage in outreach efforts, maintain communication with various stakeholders, and ensure compliance with university policies and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Inform and advise prospective students and their families on CSU admissions eligibility, career choices, and admissions possibilities.
  • Evaluate transcripts to determine admissibility and work with the PeopleSoft student information system.
  • Conduct admission workshops for admitted students and campus/community partners.
  • Assist with the creation and implementation of the returning student life cycle, including inquiry, advising, application, and readmission.
  • Maintain inquiry database and ensure prospect coding is current in PeopleSoft for accurate data and communications.
  • Provide quality assurance across all levels of communication with internal and external constituents.
  • Triages and solves student application, admission, denial, and appeal issues.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in a job-related field or equivalent experience in student services or a related field.
  • 1 year of professional experience in student services or a related field.
  • Working knowledge of CSU admissions policies and procedures.
  • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of Office of Admissions programmatic functions and operations.
  • Cultural/social awareness related to the needs of returning and re-entry students.
  • Knowledge of counseling techniques and theories.
