About the position

The Adoption Counselor/Customer Service Representative at Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA plays a crucial role in facilitating the adoption process for animals. This position involves engaging with the public to educate them about available pets, ensuring safe interactions, and making suitable matches between animals and potential adopters. The counselor is responsible for maintaining the welfare of the animals, providing care, and handling various administrative tasks related to adoptions and animal care.

Responsibilities

  • Show animals available for adoption in an educational and informative manner.
  • Counsel visitors on safe behaviors when meeting adoptable animals.
  • Work with a diverse customer base to achieve positive adoption outcomes.
  • Make suggestions for more appropriate animals to adopters based on their experience level.
  • Participate in Behavior Playgroups to increase adoptability of shelter dogs.
  • Update the website with new animals for adoption and remove adopted animals promptly.
  • Care for and educate the public about Adoptable Exotic Animals.
  • Administer microchip IDs to public animals at owner's request.
  • Vaccinate dogs and cats and occasionally administer medication to exotic animals.
  • Counsel the public on responsible animal care issues.
  • Handle counter transactions including adoption interviews and cashier duties.
  • Maintain cleanliness in the Adoption Center and perform spot cleaning in kennels.
  • Safely handle and socialize all animals available for adoption.
  • Work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Chameleon database.
  • Valid California driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Good working knowledge of animal breeds, nutrition, and general care.
  • Ability to work with and handle animals safely and effectively.
  • Clear and professional communication skills.

  • Knowledge, appreciation, and respect for various animal species including birds, reptiles, and rodents.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions and correspondence.
