About the position

The Adult Education Instructor at the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is responsible for delivering English Language Training (ELT), Cultural Orientation (CO), Job Readiness Training (JRT), and Digital Literacy instruction to refugees and immigrants. This role aims to support education programs that help humanitarian entrants develop essential English language skills for employment and self-sufficiency. The instructor will work under the supervision of the Adult Education Coordinator and is expected to engage students effectively while managing client data for grant reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Provide content-based English language instruction (ELT, JRT, CO, and/or digital literacy).
  • Develop and implement engaging lesson plans that assist students in meeting their goals and offer a variety of instructional methods adapted to diverse learning styles.
  • Incorporate job readiness and technology into ESL classroom instruction.
  • Design and administer student assessment tools that gauge student learning and monitor achievement of performance outcomes.
  • Create a welcoming environment that fosters community and learning among program participants.
  • Submit weekly lesson plans and/or bi-weekly unit plans that address material to be covered in class.
  • Coordinate registration, intake and pre- and post-testing as needed.
  • Monitor and track student participation in program.
  • Assist with reporting requirements as needed.
  • Attend regular team meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • University degree, plus at least 1 year of experience teaching adult English language learners (ELLs).
  • TESOL degree/certificate preferred.
  • Experience living in a country outside of the U.S. highly desired.
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory and student-centered teaching strategies.
  • Comfort working with refugees and immigrants from a variety of backgrounds, including those with limited formal education and/or literacy skills.
  • Strong culturally responsive interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience working with interpreters.
  • Experience using Zoom or online learning platforms.
  • Detail oriented and organized.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Nice-to-haves

  • Fluency in another language strongly preferred.
