About the position

The Adult Protective Services Specialist role at Loudoun County involves conducting investigations into reports of abuse, neglect, and exploitation of vulnerable adults. The position requires providing on-call support and ongoing case management services to older adults and adults with disabilities, ensuring their health, safety, and well-being. The specialist will work within a diverse team to advocate for clients' rights and connect them with necessary resources, while maintaining compliance with relevant laws and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate reports of abuse, neglect, and exploitation of vulnerable adults.
  • Conduct unannounced home visits in the community to respond to APS allegations.
  • Gather and analyze evidence, interview relevant parties, and document findings.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Respond to emergency calls and provide immediate assistance to vulnerable adults.
  • Be available for on-call duties as scheduled, ensuring timely and effective response to crisis situations.
  • Assess clients' needs and develop protective service plans tailored to each client's situation.
  • Advocate for clients' rights and connect them with appropriate resources and services.
  • Monitor clients' progress and adjust service plans as necessary.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed case records, ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements.
  • Complete necessary federal, state, and local planning and reporting requirements.
  • Ensure accurate and timely data entry into required systems.
  • Coordinate with other agencies and participate in multi-disciplinary and inter-agency teams to provide comprehensive services to clients.
  • Conduct community presentations and serve as a resource to clients and the community in areas of expertise.
  • Inform clients of related services programs, rules, regulations, and their rights to participate.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Sociology, Public Administration, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
  • Two (2) years of related work experience in a social service or child/adult welfare agency.

Nice-to-haves

  • Comprehensive knowledge of Adult Protective Services/Adult Services programs and procedures.
  • Significant experience in conducting APS investigations and providing APS ongoing case management services to older adults and/or adults with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of social work theory, casework methods, and community organization/resources.
  • Understanding of human behavior and the behavioral sciences, particularly concerning human development, aging, family dynamics, and interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to engage in sensitive discussions with clients about various aspects of their lives.
  • Capacity to respond effectively in crisis situations.
  • Master's degree in Social Work, Gerontology, or a related field.
  • Experience working in local government or a department of social services.
  • Bi-lingual skills in Spanish and English.
