About the position

The Adult Protective Services Specialist at the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services is responsible for protecting elderly individuals and adults with disabilities who are unable to safeguard themselves. This role involves conducting home visits, assessing situations of abuse or neglect, and providing support to vulnerable populations. The position requires a blend of crisis intervention skills, knowledge of relevant laws, and the ability to work independently in various environments, often using mobile technology.

Responsibilities

• Conduct home visits to assess the safety and well-being of elderly and disabled adults.
• Investigate reports of abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
• Provide crisis intervention and support to clients in need.
• Maintain effective communication with clients, families, and other stakeholders.
• Document case findings and maintain accurate records in compliance with agency standards.
• Collaborate with community resources and services to assist clients.
• Be on call to respond to reports of abuse or neglect as needed.

Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university.
• Knowledge of agency policies, procedures, and standards.
• Knowledge of Texas laws relating to adult protective services.
• Knowledge of gerontology and the dynamics of the aging process.
• Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques and skills.
• Ability to work effectively with difficult abuse/neglect complaints.
• Ability to empathize and provide encouragement to disabled adults and the elderly.
• Ability to operate a personal computer and various software packages.
• Ability to make home visits in isolated or high crime areas.

Nice-to-haves

• Bilingual skills are preferred.
• Experience working with people with disabilities.
• Driver's License is preferred.
