About the position

The Advanced Application Engineer position at 3M offers a unique opportunity to engage in application development and technical support within the Commercial Branding and Transportation Division. This role is pivotal in driving growth through customer collaborations, fieldwork, and the commercialization of new products. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and replicating innovative applications that have a significant impact on the market. This involves understanding customer requirements, recommending solutions from the CBTD Pavement Marking Portfolio, and leading product field evaluations. The engineer will also play a crucial role in delivering training to customers and internal teams, ensuring that all stakeholders are well-informed about product capabilities and application processes. In addition to application development, the Advanced Application Engineer will support the sales, marketing, and manufacturing teams by providing ongoing technical coaching and sharing insights on product and application processes. This position requires active involvement in industry associations, conducting competitive analyses, and sharing key learnings with the global 3M organization. The role demands a willingness to travel domestically and internationally, with travel expectations of up to 35%. The engineer will also be responsible for implementing project scopes and suggesting future directions based on results, as well as supporting the development of intellectual property processes, including invention submissions and patents. Overall, this position is designed for a proactive individual who is eager to collaborate with diverse teams and make a meaningful impact in the industry. The work environment is flexible, allowing for a balance between individual initiative and teamwork, and the role is based in Maplewood, MN.

Responsibilities

  • Develop new applications by understanding customer requirements and recommending CBTD Pavement Marking Portfolio Solutions and corresponding application processes.
  • Contribute insights, lead product field evaluations, and develop and deliver customer training as a team member in New Product Introduction (NPI) projects.
  • Support the sales, marketing, and manufacturing organizations with internal training and ongoing technical coaching.
  • Lead and influence the industry by involvement and leadership in industry associations.
  • Conduct competitive analysis and share key learnings with the 3M global organization.
  • Implement project scope, expectations, and requirements to suggest future direction based on results.
  • Determine which technical skills to apply to provide support and services to internal and external customers through product localization/converting, technology development, process development, and life cycle management.
  • Support the development of intellectual property processes and positions, including Invention Submission (IS's), patents, and trade secrets.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in a science or engineering discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Three (3) years of experience providing technical sales support in a private, public, government, or military environment.
  • Current, valid Driver's License.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in a related discipline (Graphics Art, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or Electrical Engineering) from an accredited university.
  • Possess intrapersonal skills - able to communicate at all levels of the organization.
  • Written and oral presentation, training, and communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Ability to work independently and take responsibility for assignments within a team environment.
  • Experience with statistical software.
