The Advanced Apprentice Substation Technician - Electrical/Mechanical position at Minnesota Power involves installing, maintaining, fabricating, and repairing electrical and mechanical systems within substations and communication sites. This role requires journey-level skills in various fields and includes responsibilities such as performing switching operations, coordinating work activities, and ensuring safety compliance. The technician will also assist in training apprentices and contribute to the development of construction and maintenance technology.

  • Install, maintain, fabricate and repair transmission and distribution substations, generating and substation equipment, and communication sites.
  • Perform duties requiring journey-level skill in electrical, mechanical, concrete, or structural steel fields.
  • Perform switching at substations and in the field.
  • Receive and interpret work assignments.
  • Decide work priorities under broad supervision.
  • Plan and coordinate equipment and material, determining logical task sequences.
  • Coordinate activities with internal and external contacts.
  • Work with crew and occasionally direct other personnel in construction and maintenance tasks.
  • Become involved with design modifications or development as needed.
  • Ensure work is carried out within acceptable boundaries.
  • Responsible for administrative duties and staying current with policies and procedures.
  • Meet safety and training requirements and communicate safety policies to contractors.
  • Participate in documenting apprentice's progression and provide feedback.
  • Assist in training for apprentices and other crew members.
  • Develop and maintain understanding of construction and maintenance technology, tools, and procedures.
  • Utilize appropriate leadership and human relationship skills in working with others.
  • A two-year technical degree with significant coursework in electronics or electrical technology for external candidates.
  • Completion of a four-year apprenticeship or a two-year technical degree for internal candidates.
  • Two years or more of directly related experience installing, maintaining, and constructing electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Specialized training in HVAC or Thermography.
