About the position

This position is for a Mechanical Engineer specializing in thermal management and Auxiliary Power Units (APUs) at Honeywell's Rocky Research team. The role involves performing mechanical engineering assignments related to heat transfer and cooling flow analyses, designing complex cooling systems, and supporting the development and testing of APUs. The engineer will work on projects that require collaboration across multiple organizations and will be responsible for communicating technical results to both internal and external customers.

Responsibilities

  • Perform professional mechanical engineering assignments such as heat transfer and secondary cooling flow analyses without appreciable supervision.
  • Conceive, design and execute complex cooling schemes to increase component durability with minimum impact to engine and/or system performance.
  • Create and calibrate 2D and 3D transient conduction-convection thermal models using NX thermal or equivalent software.
  • Support the development, build & testing of APUs in preparation for end customer delivery.
  • Plan and support engine thermal survey testing and data postprocessing for thermal model calibration, engine certification, and Root Cause Corrective Action (RCCA) efforts.
  • Effectively manage complex projects involving multiple organizations to successfully complete all assignments.
  • Support continuous process improvement projects within the organization.
  • Communicate technical results to internal and external customers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
  • Minimum of 3+ years' experience in thermal fluid sciences.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak English.
  • Experience in the design & modeling of thermal systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • MS/PhD Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering is a plus.
  • Advanced understanding of heat transfer including derivation of boundary conditions, application of thermal boundary conditions, and running of thermal analytical models.
  • Advanced understanding of fluid dynamics.
  • Basic knowledge of using CAD tools to generate and manipulate geometry.
  • Knowledge of trends in high heat flux heat transfer systems, phase change material based thermal energy storage, and two-phase flow cooling.
  • Experience in design and build of experimental facilities.
  • Experience in data acquisition, analysis, and reporting.
  • Excellent understanding of the principles, challenges, and tradeoffs of thermal energy storage systems.
  • Strong teamwork skills, able to work in a variety of team roles within a cross-functional team.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

Benefits

  • Equal opportunity employer with consideration for all qualified applicants without regard to age, race, creed, color, national origin, ancestry, marital status, affectional or sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, disability, nationality, sex, religion, or veteran status.
