About the position

Honeywell is seeking an Advanced Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Engines and APU Turbines team in Phoenix, Arizona. This is an outstanding opportunity for a mechanical engineer with gas turbine experience. The role encompasses a variety of responsibilities including the design, analysis, lifing, and testing support of gas turbine components for new designs, redesigns, and to resolve field-related issues. The successful candidate will be expected to perform professional mechanical engineering assignments with minimal supervision, particularly in the areas of heat transfer and secondary cooling flow analyses. In this position, you will conceive, design, and execute complex cooling schemes aimed at increasing component durability while minimizing the impact on engine performance. A strong emphasis will be placed on thermal design and analysis of cooled airfoil components, such as nozzles and blades. You will be responsible for creating and calibrating 2D and 3D transient conduction-convection thermal models using NX thermal or equivalent software, as well as developing 3D conjugate heat transfer models using StarCCM+ or similar software. Knowledge and experience in applying DFSS (Design for Six Sigma) methodology for design optimization will be beneficial. Additionally, you will plan and support engine thermal survey testing and data post-processing for thermal model calibration, engine certification, and Root Cause Corrective Action (RCCA) efforts. The role requires effective management of complex projects that involve multiple organizations to ensure successful completion of all assignments. Continuous process improvement projects within the organization will also be part of your responsibilities, along with communicating technical results to both internal and external customers.

Responsibilities

  • Perform professional mechanical engineering assignments such as heat transfer and secondary cooling flow analyses without appreciable supervision.
  • Conceive, design and execute complex cooling schemes to increase component durability with minimum impact to engine performance.
  • Conduct thermal design and analysis of cooled airfoil components such as nozzles and blades.
  • Create and calibrate 2D and 3D transient conduction-convection thermal models using NX thermal or equivalent software.
  • Create 3D conjugate heat transfer models using StarCCM+ or equivalent software.
  • Apply DFSS methodology for design optimization.
  • Plan and support engine thermal survey testing and data post-processing for thermal model calibration, engine certification, and RCCA efforts.
  • Manage complex projects involving multiple organizations to successfully complete all assignments.
  • Support continuous process improvement projects within the organization.
  • Communicate technical results to internal and external customers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
  • Minimum of 3+ years' experience in thermal fluid sciences.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or green card holder due to export control regulations.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English.

Nice-to-haves

  • MS/PhD Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering is a plus.
  • Advanced understanding of heat transfer including derivation of boundary conditions, application of thermal boundary conditions, and running of thermal analytical models.
  • Advanced understanding of fluid dynamics.
  • Basic knowledge of using CAD tools to generate and manipulate geometry.
  • Strong teamwork skills, able to work in a variety of team roles within cross-functional teams.
  • Dedication to customer satisfaction and capability to establish and maintain strong business and personal relationships with customers and co-workers.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
