About the position

The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (MSA) plays a crucial role in providing specialized administrative patient support within an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model at the Durham Department of Veterans Affairs. This position involves utilizing administrative judgment and managing clinical flow processes to ensure access to care across multiple clinics and specialties. The MSA is responsible for various administrative tasks that contribute to the efficient operation of healthcare services, ensuring patient safety and compliance with Veterans Health Administration (VHA) directives.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with clinic access contingency plans by adjusting appointment times and locations.
  • Collect, scan, and update health insurance information to support the revenue process.
  • Promote veteran registration for MyHealtheVet (MHV).
  • Ensure patient safety by verifying identification using two forms of ID.
  • Integrate health and administrative information into the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS).
  • Screen and receive phone calls, determining the nature of requests and providing information as needed.
  • Interpret and communicate requirements of VHA Scheduling Directives and assist in training other MSAs.
  • Review active/pending consults for scheduling, accuracy, and disposition.
  • Participate in daily team huddles and weekly team meetings for patient care planning.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Six months of clerical, office, or related experience, or one year above high school education, or a combination of both.
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level, including duties related to healthcare service delivery.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully, both orally and in writing.
  • Advanced knowledge of healthcare processes related to access to care and clinic management.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with electronic health records and scheduling systems.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and healthcare regulations.
