About the position

The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) plays a crucial role in the administrative aspects of patient care within the Veterans Health Administration. This position focuses on scheduling and coordinating appointments, managing patient information, and providing excellent customer service to ensure efficient healthcare delivery. The AMSA serves as the initial point of contact for patients, utilizing advanced clinic access principles to enhance patient access and satisfaction.

Responsibilities

  • Greet and check in patients, assisting with mobile check-in as needed.
  • Gather medical information and refer patients to appropriate healthcare team members.
  • Document patient complaints and report any issues affecting service delivery.
  • Monitor and manage incoming phone calls, ensuring effective communication.
  • Maintain medical charts and generate patient workload reports.
  • Serve as a technical advisor for electronic medical record systems.
  • Schedule patient appointments according to VA directives and guidelines.
  • Prepare clinic for patient visits by printing appointment and clinic lists.
  • Ensure completion of encounter forms and daily recalls.
  • Conduct audits and collect data for reporting purposes.
  • Provide training and mentorship to junior Medical Support Assistants.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English is mandatory.
  • Six months of experience in clerical, office, customer service, or administrative work is required, or one year above high school education.
  • Ability to operate computerized programs and systems for data entry and retrieval.
  • Advanced knowledge of medical terminology and healthcare processes.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a healthcare setting, particularly in outpatient services.
  • Familiarity with VA medical systems and procedures.
  • Certification in medical administration or related fields.
