The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) role in the Pediatric Surgery Unit at the University of Chicago Medical Center involves comprehensive direct patient care management. The APP will manage a caseload of patients, exercising autonomous decision-making in assessment, diagnosis, and initiation of delegated medical treatments. This position requires advanced practice skills and knowledge to assist physicians, providing healthcare services that include educational, research, and clinical nursing support, along with administrative activities under supervision.

  • Manage a caseload of patients and provide comprehensive direct patient care.
  • Exercise autonomous decision-making in assessment, diagnosis, and initiation of delegated medical treatments.
  • Conduct patient history taking, examinations, and diagnosing illnesses.
  • Perform pre- and post-operative patient evaluations and assist during complicated operations.
  • Order and interpret laboratory tests as part of patient care.
  • Provide family support and education, staff education, and consultation.
  • Engage in research activities related to pediatric surgery.
  • Master's of Science in Nursing for Nurse Practitioners or completion of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program.
  • Current and/or eligibility for State of Illinois RN and APN licensure/registration for Nurse Practitioners.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurse's Credentialing Center or American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.
  • Certification in ACLS and by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) for Physician Assistants.
  • ATLS certification for Physician Assistants.
  • Prior pediatric experience is required for both Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants.
