About the position

The APP will initiate diagnostic evaluations for thoracic malignancies, including lung, esophageal, and thymic carcinomas, as well as benign foregut disorders and chest wall deformities. Additionally, the APP will manage long-term cancer surveillance for patients. Surgical or surgical oncology experience is preferred. The APP will collaborate with surgeons and the APP team in the thoracic surgery practice. This position is primarily ambulatory, working in a multidisciplinary environment with teams from Oncology, Pulmonology, Radiation Oncology, and other specialties.

Responsibilities

  • Initiate diagnostic evaluations for thoracic malignancies and benign foregut disorders.
  • Manage long-term cancer surveillance for patients.
  • Collaborate with surgeons and the APP team in the thoracic surgery practice.
  • Work in a multidisciplinary environment with teams from various specialties.
  • Exercise independent judgment in assessment, diagnosis, and initiation of medical processes and procedures.
  • Perform and document comprehensive health histories and physical assessments.
  • Formulate diagnoses and identify problems and health risk profiles.
  • Perform, order, and interpret diagnostic studies in consultation with peers.
  • Perform procedures within scope of practice and credentialing.
  • Order medications, treatments, and therapies in accordance with regulations.
  • Request consultations and initiate referrals to other health care providers.
  • Evaluate and analyze patient responses to disease processes and interventions.
  • Provide information, education, and support to patients and families regarding disease processes and treatment plans.
  • Participate in on-call responsibilities as appropriate.
  • Manage patients in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Report births, deaths, outbreaks of communicable diseases, and other critical information.
  • Meet quality standards as determined by the Medical Director and/or UVA Health System.
  • Serve on select committees as needed.
  • Participate in the clinical experience of students, interns, and residents as appropriate.
  • Participate in group, peer, and other review activities as requested.
  • Prepare and attend to all reports, claims, and correspondence necessary for professional services.
  • Promote the professional practice of the advanced practice group by serving as a clinical resource.
  • Follow policies and procedures of UPG, UVA Medical Center, CMS, and other contracted payers.
  • Accurately assign CPT and ICD-10 codes.
  • Update practice through continuing education and professional development activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned that are commensurate with professional service.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited graduate school of nursing or physician assistant program with a master's degree.
  • License or license eligible as an Advance Practice Provider in Virginia.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Current PALS/NRP certification as required for the position.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification as required for the position.

Nice-to-haves

  • Surgical or surgical oncology experience preferred.
