About the position

The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is dedicated to eliminating cancer through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research, and prevention. The position involves performing clinical patient care duties, including attending clinics, conducting assessments, documenting progress notes, and assisting with various clinic-related activities. Additionally, the role includes responsibilities related to research, such as screening patients for clinical trials and maintaining records. The candidate will coordinate services from different departments and ensure accurate documentation of tumor board meetings.

Responsibilities

  • Attend clinics with physician and independently.
  • Conduct preliminary assessments of physician's new and follow-up clinic patients.
  • Document clinic progress notes on physician's follow-up patients and on new patients.
  • Write outpatient orders, including those for chemotherapy, IV fluids, transfusions, growth factors, etc.
  • Assist with physician's clinic-related paperwork.
  • Assist with physician's miscellaneous clinic activities.
  • Screen patients' telephone calls and refer to physician when appropriate.
  • Evaluate physician's clinic and Emergency Center 'drop-in' patients.
  • Assume responsibility for physician's clinic patients in physician's absence.
  • Attend department meetings pertinent to patient care.
  • Perform a variety of research related duties during non-clinic hours.
  • Assess patients for protocol eligibility and explain protocol treatment options.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Coordinate the services from different departments within the institution.
  • Compile case study data discussed at tumor board meetings.
  • Ensure accurate documentation in the 'EPIC's problem list' of MDC discussions.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice.
  • Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification if working in Pediatric departments.
  • Master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program for Physician Assistants.
  • PA certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants.
  • Licensed by the Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners.

Nice-to-haves

  • At least 1 year of experience in Advanced Practice Provider role.
  • Prior Oncology experience.
