About the position

The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is dedicated to eliminating cancer through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research, and prevention, along with education for students, trainees, professionals, employees, and the public. The position involves performing clinical patient care duties, including conducting assessments, writing notes and orders, assisting with clinic-related paperwork, and evaluating patients. The role also includes responsibilities during non-clinic hours, such as screening patients for eligibility and preparing chemotherapy orders. The position requires collaboration with physicians and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct preliminary assessments of physician's new and follow-up clinic patients.
  • Dictate clinic progress notes on physician's follow-up patients.
  • Dictate PMEs on new patients and consultation notes on new consults.
  • Write admission notes and orders for physician's patients admitted into the hospital.
  • Write outpatient orders, including those for chemotherapy, IV fluids, transfusions, growth factors, etc.
  • Assist with physician's clinic-related paperwork.
  • Assist with physician's miscellaneous clinic activities.
  • Screen patients' telephone calls and refer to physician when appropriate.
  • Evaluate physician's clinic and Emergency Center 'drop-in' patients.
  • Assume responsibility for physician's clinic patients in physician's absence.
  • Attend department meetings pertinent to patient care.
  • Assist physician with in-patient care when needed.
  • Perform bone marrow aspiration procedures.
  • Screen patients for eligibility and obtain charts and x-rays as needed.
  • Help prepare chemotherapy orders.
  • Explain treatment options and plans to patients.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice.
  • Graduate education and related Texas Board of Nursing authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population.
  • Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification if working in Pediatric departments.
  • Master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant (PA) program.
  • PA certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants.
  • Licensed by the Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners.

Nice-to-haves

  • Hematology experience.
  • At least 1 year of experience in Advanced Practice Provider role.
