About the position

The Advanced Practice Provider in the Melanoma Medical Oncology Department at MD Anderson Cancer Center plays a crucial role in delivering exceptional care to patients with melanoma. This position involves both inpatient and outpatient clinical activities, including patient evaluations, managing daily patient issues, and coordinating care with other healthcare professionals. The role also encompasses participation in clinical research, administrative tasks, and continuing education to ensure the highest standards of patient care and professional development.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct inpatient rounds with attending physicians and communicate pertinent clinical information based on physical examination and review of patient data.
  • Evaluate patients and communicate pertinent clinical information to attending physicians.
  • Facilitate appointments and testing for new patients and consults patients to the department.
  • Manage daily patient problems and emergencies, documenting actions and resolutions.
  • Complete PME's, admission H&P, consultation notes, daily progress notes, and discharge summaries in compliance with guidelines.
  • Request consultations and communicate with other services to coordinate patient care.
  • Coordinate admissions as needed by the patient and as dictated by training.
  • Conduct hospice referrals and coordinate discharge planning.
  • Order patient medications, treatments, and tests within authorized delegated prescriptive authority.
  • Assist research nurses with patient protocol-related events.
  • Participate in the education of students and new hires.
  • Perform procedures such as skin biopsy, lumbar puncture, and venipuncture.
  • Assist with the management of unscheduled patients.
  • Serve as the liaison for new patient referrals to the department.
  • Schedule special procedures with the appropriate department.
  • Collect patient test results, act on abnormalities, and present results to the physician.
  • Monitor and follow up on results of tests and act on abnormalities.
  • Complete paperwork for patients, including letters and insurance forms.
  • Complete peer-to-peer reviews for insurance authorization.
  • Responsible for billing utilizing the Electronic Billing System.
  • Attend continuing medical education opportunities and departmental meetings.
  • Collaborate with the research team on clinical protocols and management of protocol-related events.
  • Assess patients for protocol eligibility and notify the research team of potential candidates.
  • Deliver medical presentations within the institution and at various levels.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice.
  • Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification if working in Pediatrics.
  • Master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant (PA) program for Physician Assistants.
  • PA certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants.
  • Licensed by the Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners.

Nice-to-haves
