About the position

The Advanced Staff Medical Technologist - Analyzer Specialist at the Department of Veterans Affairs is responsible for performing complex laboratory testing and maintaining operations of new test systems. This role includes training technicians, writing procedures, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. The position requires a high level of expertise in various laboratory disciplines, including Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, and Blood Bank, while also providing technical advice and support to medical staff.

Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced laboratory testing in Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, and Blood Bank.
  • Train new employees and conduct annual competency assessments.
  • Assist in writing and maintaining laboratory procedures and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in inspections and prepare responses to regulatory agencies.
  • Review test results for errors and take corrective actions as necessary.
  • Perform quality control testing and maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Monitor inventory and submit reports to the supervisor.
  • Assist in the implementation of new test systems and proficiency testing.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science or related field, and completion of a clinical practice program.
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS).
  • At least one year of experience equivalent to the GS-9 level in a laboratory setting.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with laboratory safety protocols.
  • Familiarity with CAP, CLIA, and Joint Commission regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to provide technical training and guidance to staff.
