About the position

The Advanced Transportation Operations Chief Engineer at MITRE is responsible for leading the technical quality and strategic direction of the Advanced Transportation Operations Division. This role involves developing relationships with senior leaders in various transportation sectors, ensuring high-quality technical outputs, and mentoring staff to enhance their capabilities. The Chief Engineer will drive innovation and collaboration across projects to optimize transportation operations and improve public mobility.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the technical quality of the work program and lead the evolution of technical capabilities within the division.
  • Develop close working relationships with senior leaders in the FAA, state transportation agencies, and international authorities.
  • Transform the work program by aligning efforts with sponsor priorities and applying innovative thinking.
  • Ensure the quality of staff, infrastructure, and products to represent MITRE's technical mastery.
  • Lead the division's technical strategy and workforce shaping initiatives.
  • Mentor and develop staff, contributing to talent assessment and planning.
  • Coordinate technical outreach and partnerships with industry and academia to enhance the division's work.
  • Initiate internal research and development investments to address mission challenges.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with 12 years of related experience, Master's degree with 10 years of related experience, or PhD with 7 years of related experience.
  • Minimum of 7 years of leadership experience in leading teams and projects.
  • Demonstrated effective collaboration and communication skills.
  • Proven experience engaging senior sponsors and establishing strategic partnerships.
  • Ability to lead and support technical talent development.
  • Experience in delivering high-quality technical products under government-funded projects.
  • Technical background in aerospace engineering, systems engineering, software development, or related disciplines.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with the transportation sector and the Federal Aviation Administration.
  • Active clearance at the Secret level.
  • Research project leadership experience.
