About the position

The Advisor, Global Health Technical Proposal Writer plays a crucial role in supporting proposal research and design, serving as either a lead or contributing writer for specific proposal opportunities. This position is essential for enabling Jhpiego to develop, implement, and continually enhance processes that improve the efficiency and effectiveness of proposal preparation. The primary responsibility of the Advisor is to craft compelling proposals that align with Jhpiego's strategic goals and resonate with potential donors. The ideal candidate is a creative, proactive, and passionate professional with a growth mindset, who thrives on transforming ideas into actionable plans while collaborating with technical and multidisciplinary teams. In the role of proposal writer, the Advisor will be responsible for leading or supporting the technical narrative of new funding opportunities, which may include open competitive procurements, concept notes, and invitations from donors. This involves working closely with teams composed of technical and program staff to produce cohesive, responsive, and compelling proposals. The Advisor will ensure that the narrative adheres to proposal-writing standards, focusing on readability, consistency, and tone, while effectively weaving together contributions from various writers to create a unified voice. Additionally, the Advisor will lead and contribute to strategic positioning and design during the development phase of upcoming procurements, participate as a member of the proposal team to support project design, and assist in conceptualizing and creating graphics that enhance the technical narrative. The Advisor will also play a key role in improving Jhpiego's approach to project design and writing, optimizing competitiveness and responsiveness to donor requirements, and disseminating best practices across departments. This position may also involve leading special projects and advising on strategy and organizational positioning for future business opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as lead or supporting writer for technical narrative of new funding opportunities, ensuring cohesiveness and responsiveness to donor requirements.
  • Assure quality narrative following proposal-writing standards, including readability, consistency, and tone.
  • Lead and/or contribute to strategic positioning, design, and collate inputs from proposal team during the development phase of upcoming procurements.
  • Support the design lead and facilitate project design as a member of the proposal team.
  • Conceptualize and create graphics within the technical narrative, collaborating with the design lead.
  • Improve Jhpiego's approach to project design and writing to enhance competitiveness and project outcomes.
  • Establish, improve, and disseminate processes, tools, and templates for writers preparing technical proposals.
  • Serve in an advisory role regarding strategy and organizational positioning for future business.
  • Develop and/or lead special projects with relevant staff from various departments.
  • Identify factors contributing to Jhpiego's competitiveness and work with proposal teams to address gaps.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in public health or international development; advanced degree preferred.
  • 5 to 7 years' experience in designing, developing, drafting, implementing, or managing public health projects.
  • Demonstrated record of writing successful proposals or other products to support resource mobilization efforts.
  • Strong ability to articulate cogent, concise, and compelling proposal narratives aligned with organizational value propositions.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams of clinicians, public health specialists, and program managers.
  • Ability to assess responsiveness of narrative to donor requirements and identify gaps.
  • Excellent interpersonal, writing, and oral presentation skills.
  • Proven knowledge of USAID and large foundation donor programming and technical procurement procedures.
  • Strong change management, results-oriented, and decision-making skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • 2+ years field experience in regions such as Africa, Asia, and/or Latin America.
  • Ability to strengthen the capacity of colleagues in proposal writing and project design.
  • Fluency in a second language such as French, Portuguese, or Spanish.
