About the position

The Senior Discipline Lead for AI/ML at NASA's Spacecraft Software Engineering Branch is responsible for spearheading innovative AI initiatives and applications within human spaceflight exploration and research programs. This role is pivotal in shaping the future of AI technologies, driving innovation, and utilizing AI to address complex challenges associated with various NASA missions.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee AI projects from inception to deployment, ensuring alignment with technical objectives, budget constraints, and mission timelines.
  • Define team goals, responsibilities, work scope, and priorities for the design, development, integration, and verification of AI applications.
  • Coordinate closely with Program/Project teams to determine resource requirements and manage resources to accomplish team objectives.
  • Foster collaboration with internal NASA teams, industry partners, academia, and government agencies to leverage external expertise in AI research and development.
  • Oversee project schedules, set priorities, resolve conflicts, and integrate feedback from team members.
  • Perform risk analysis of flight products and elevate concerns and solutions to appropriate management levels.
  • Effectively communicate AI strategies, technical findings, and project updates to stakeholders, including senior management and external partners.
  • Work as an effective problem solver, integrating input from all available sources to develop solutions in response to changing conditions.
  • Provide expert guidance in AI technologies, including machine learning, computer vision, autonomy, natural language processing, and data analytics.
  • Foster a culture of engagement, diversity, inclusiveness, excellence, and innovation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science, or Computer Science with relevant coursework in mathematics and statistics.
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level, including leading AI projects and providing expert guidance in AI technologies.
  • Experience fostering collaboration with industry partners, academia, and government agencies in AI research and development.

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience with NASA missions or aerospace projects.
  • Familiarity with federal employment processes and regulations.
