About the position

The After School Program Kindergarten Teacher position at Mission Graduates offers an exciting opportunity for individuals looking to begin their careers in education or work with students. This role is designed for those who are eager to gain hands-on experience in lesson planning, leading classroom activities, and collaborating with experienced teachers within the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD). The position is set in a friendly and supportive environment, where educators work together to help K-12 students in the Mission District of San Francisco. As a Kindergarten Teacher, you will be responsible for planning and leading daily academic and enrichment activities for approximately twenty students. You will utilize a standards-based curriculum to create lesson plans that enhance students' literacy development. Additionally, you will lead an enrichment class each semester, which could include subjects such as art, drumming, or gardening. Your role will also involve developing and integrating college culture-building activities into the classroom, fostering a nurturing and respectful multicultural learning environment. You will support students in reaching specific literacy benchmarks and facilitate activities that enhance vocabulary building and reading comprehension, aligning with the school day’s learning objectives. The position also requires you to assist in community outreach, maintain communication with families, and supervise volunteers. You will participate in staff development and team meetings, and provide overall support for the program, including organizing field trips and special events. This role is crucial in building cultural and educational bridges with students and their families, ensuring a holistic approach to education.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and lead daily academic and enrichment activities for about twenty students
  • Utilize standards-based curriculum to write lesson plans infusing students literacy development
  • Lead an enrichment class (i.e. art, drumming, gardening) each semester
  • Develop and integrate college 'culture-building' activities into the classroom
  • Coordinate and support volunteers in the classroom
  • Develop a nurturing, safe, respectful, multicultural learning environment
  • Support students to reach specific literacy benchmarks
  • Facilitate vocabulary building and reading comprehension activities that build upon the school day learning objectives
  • Design, develop and implement theme & project-based learning projects that supports student academic and personal achievement
  • Build cultural and educational bridges with students and their families
  • Assist in community outreach, parent communication, and volunteer supervision
  • Coordinate on-going communication and feedback systems with families, teachers and volunteers
  • Assist in the daily operations of the EDP including supervising youth, administrative tasks & staff development
  • Maintain accurate youth files and records, i.e. attendance, student behavior, and other evaluation forms to track student progress
  • Participate in staff development, team and supervision meetings
  • Provide overall support of the program, including support for field trips, special events and parent workshops
  • Plan and coordinate field trips, parent events, and other school-wide events
  • Serve as part of larger Mission Graduates team
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor

Requirements

  • Strong interest in education and teaching
  • Understanding of youth development principles
  • Passion for working with students and youth
  • Willingness to explore alternative, non-institutional teaching methods
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse communities and demonstrate understanding of cultural diversity
  • Bilingual Spanish/English fluency is preferred
  • TB test clearance mandatory prior to hire
  • Experience working in communities of color with low-income populations
  • Flexibility, organization, and initiative are essential
  • Current CPR certification (or attained within 2 months of employment)
