About the position

The OR Tech I position at Bassett Medical Center is a vital role within the operating room team, responsible for assisting in surgical procedures by scrubbing for cases, managing instruments, and ensuring patient safety. This role requires collaboration with surgeons, nurses, and anesthesiologists, and involves maintaining a sterile environment while efficiently managing supplies and equipment. The OR Tech I is expected to demonstrate clinical skills, adhere to safety standards, and participate in ongoing education and training.

Responsibilities

  • Scrub for surgical cases under supervision.
  • Handle instruments, supplies, medication, media, specimens, and instrument cases.
  • Manage the surgical field efficiently to minimize waste.
  • Maintain supplies and equipment in assigned specialties.
  • Demonstrate skills in scrubbing for all surgical specialties.
  • Assist in solving immediate patient care problems within the scope of ORT practice.
  • Select appropriate equipment and supplies for surgical cases.
  • Handle instrumentation safely with attention to counts and personal safety.
  • Adhere to standards of practice to assure patient safety.
  • Assist with inventory maintenance for assigned specialties.
  • Use supplies and institutional resources responsibly.
  • Differentiate sterilization methods for specific instruments and equipment.
  • Identify budget/replacement needs for surgical specialty supplies and equipment.
  • Participate in product, supply, and instrument evaluation.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of equipment and supplies used for surgical procedures.
  • Function within legal and policy limits of individual responsibility.
  • Assist in training students or new personnel.
  • Assume call duties as scheduled for staff assigned to the Main Campus.
  • Participate in staffing patterns reflecting variable service demands.
  • Exhibit teamwork and consideration of others.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude and flexibility in problem-solving.
  • Collaborate with all members of the healthcare team.
  • Participate in departmental/organizational committees as assigned.
  • Demonstrate initiative in expanding and sharing knowledge.
  • Participate in continued education through in-service sessions.
  • Support and respect each team member and their roles.
  • Communicate with patients and coworkers while protecting patient privacy.
  • Adhere to hospital policies regarding patient rights and confidentiality.
  • Communicate necessary information to supervisors or team leaders.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Successful completion of a nationally accredited education program for surgical technologists or equivalent military training required.
  • Evidence of employment as a surgical technologist for a cumulative period of one year between 2011 and 2015, or service in the federal government performing surgical technologist duties required.
  • Must obtain Surgical Technologist certification within one year from graduation.
  • Must obtain BLS certification within 6 months from date of hire.
  • Experience as a surgical technologist preferred.
