About the position

The Aggregate QC/QA Engineer position at NCDOT's Materials and Tests Unit is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the aggregate Quality Control/Quality Assurance (QC/QA) program. This role ensures that all sampling and testing of aggregate materials comply with Federal and State highway agency guidelines, thereby maintaining the integrity of the North Carolina Highway System. The engineer will supervise a team, conduct training, and act as a liaison between the aggregate industry and the Department, ensuring effective communication and adherence to standards.

Responsibilities

  • Review Ownership Updates and Quality Control Plans to ensure compliance.
  • Verify that Quality Control Testing meets established criteria and that test data is accurately entered into the QAP database.
  • Perform statistical analysis of Producers' Quality Control and the Department's corresponding Quality Assurance testing data to identify abnormalities.
  • Update the online mapping system (GoNC Map) with current quarry locations statewide.
  • Oversee and maintain the Quality Control laboratory verification in the Vendor systems.
  • Provide technical assistance and guidance to M&T's central laboratory, regional laboratories, and field personnel on sampling, inspection, and testing.
  • Approve new sources of aggregates for the Approved List.
  • Participate in the investigation of non-compliant materials and provide relevant data for project acceptance decisions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution.
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in engineering or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of engineering theories, techniques, practices, and procedures relating to aggregate materials, sampling, and test procedures.
  • Experience in the use of applicable software including Microsoft Office and HiCAMS.
  • Experience coordinating and communicating effectively with team members to achieve common goals.
  • Experience creating and maintaining routine written programs, records, and reports.
  • Knowledge of fundamental principles of statistics.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience managing personnel is desired.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate complex concepts to both technical and non-technical personnel.
