About the position

The Agriculture Auditor 5 position within the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) is an advanced level auditing role primarily responsible for leading audits, reviewing the work of subordinates, maintaining and updating auditing programs and procedures, and approving the issuance of licenses. This position plays a critical role in ensuring compliance with state regulations governing Grain Warehouse Keepers and Grain Dealers, which are essential components of Wisconsin's agricultural industry. The auditor will lead complex financial and compliance audits of large multi-state and multi-national entities, ensuring that their storage and purchasing activities adhere to the regulations outlined in Wisconsin Statutes Chapter 126 and Administrative Code Chapter ATCP 99. In this role, the Agriculture Auditor 5 will coordinate training for subordinate staff, review their work products, and provide constructive feedback to enhance their performance. The auditor is responsible for maintaining the annual audit schedule for Grain Warehouse Keepers and will assign staff as necessary to meet statutory audit requirements. Additionally, this position will act as the lead auditor in cases involving grain shortages or defaults in payments to producers, playing a vital role in detecting violations of laws or administrative rules through the application of established auditing procedures. The position is based in Madison, Wisconsin, and offers the flexibility of telecommuting up to 60% of the time, contingent upon operational needs and an approved telecommuting agreement. Responsibilities

  • Lead complex financial and compliance audits of large multi-state and multi-national Grain Warehouse Keepers and Grain Dealers.
  • Review the work of subordinate staff and provide feedback to enhance their performance.
  • Maintain and update auditing programs and procedures.
  • Approve the issuance of licenses for Grain Warehouse Keepers and Dealers.
  • Coordinate training for subordinate staff on auditing practices and procedures.
  • Maintain the annual audit schedule for Grain Warehouse Keepers and assign staff as necessary to meet statutory requirements.
  • Act as lead auditor in cases involving grain shortages or defaults in payments to producers.
  • Detect violations of laws or administrative rules through the application of auditing procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in accounting or finance from an accredited post-secondary college/university or commensurate work experience and training.
  • Experience with conducting financial or compliance audits, preparing financial statements, or performing financial statement analysis.
  • Experience interpreting and applying rules and/or regulations (state/federal statutes, policies, laws, etc.).
  • Experience with leadership duties such as leading an audit team, conducting training, and reviewing the work of others.

Nice-to-haves

  • Possession of a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license.
  • Experience with mathematic fundamentals including the ability to accurately apply formulas.
