About the position

The Agriculture Specialist position at U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is a critical role focused on safeguarding American agriculture by preventing the introduction of harmful plant pests and foreign animal diseases. This position involves inspecting vessels, vehicles, and baggage for restricted materials and assessing agricultural risks at various ports of entry. The role requires individuals with a background in natural sciences to apply laws and regulations regarding the admissibility of agricultural commodities and to participate in enforcement and analysis teams.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a consultant in inspection, analysis, intelligence gathering, examination, and law enforcement activities regarding agricultural commodities.
  • Apply laws and regulations to determine the admissibility of agriculture commodities and prevent the introduction of harmful pests and diseases.
  • Participate in special enforcement, targeting, or analysis teams to collect and analyze information and identify high-risk targets.
  • Plan and conduct remedial actions such as treating, disinfecting, and decontaminating prohibited commodities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, animal science, plant science, pest management, or related disciplines.
  • 5 years of relevant experience in the field or a combination of education and experience equivalent to the requirements.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Must have resided in the U.S. or its protectorates for at least three of the last five years.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in law enforcement or regulatory compliance related to agriculture.
  • Knowledge of pest management and agricultural biosecurity measures.
