About the position

TerraPower is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented, and collaborative AI Engineer to join our growing IT team. The successful candidate will respond to time-sensitive situations with the right balance of expeditious and orderly actions, demonstrating integrity, awareness, and adaptability while working in a diverse team with frequently shifting priorities. As an AI Engineer, you will play a crucial role in building AI tools that support our mission of nuclear energy innovation. This includes developing AI solutions to protect the organization's digital assets and proprietary information, ensuring personnel rely on accurate data, and identifying new opportunities to leverage AI. You will also maintain documentation for existing solutions and provide technical support to troubleshoot and resolve issues related to AI functionality. Training end-users in AI best practices will be part of your responsibilities, as you work daily to empower and augment TerraPower's human capital with AI capabilities. The AI team's purpose is to support nuclear designers and engineers by building AI systems that integrate seamlessly into their existing work processes.

Responsibilities

  • Strict adherence to established software development and project management procedures, many of which are based on nuclear and international standards.
  • Build safe and responsible AI systems.
  • Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to discuss product development, identify uses of AI tools, and figure out how to leverage tools to make processes more efficient.
  • Draft, refine, and test text prompts to ensure they yield the desired outcomes.
  • Collaborate closely with subject matter experts to gather insights and domain knowledge for effective intent creation.
  • Ensure the most efficient use of a constellation of different state-of-the-art AI models deployed on our Azure tenant infrastructure.
  • Optimize text prompts based on feedback from users.
  • Stay up to date with the latest developments in AI and machine learning.
  • Use LLMs to process large data swaths, create desired outcomes, and shape bot logic.
  • Use Excel and basic analysis tools to evaluate the efficiency of the LLM prompts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computational linguistics, or a related field.
  • 2+ years experience in developing and deploying web applications, preferably with tools that employ chatbot or conversational AI systems.
  • Ability to quickly learn the rapidly evolving fundamentals of modern AI architectures.
  • In-depth knowledge of natural language processing techniques.
  • 2+ years of C# programming with familiarity with other programming languages (Python, R, etc.).
  • Understanding of deep learning architectures and frameworks.
  • Ability to own problems end-to-end and pick up whatever knowledge is needed to get the job done.
  • Good intuition for when off-the-shelf solutions will work, with the ability to build tools to accelerate workflow quickly if they won't.
  • Ability to move fast in an environment with loosely defined tasks and competing priorities or deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team, implementing feedback quickly.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities.
  • Strong communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Fluent in the processes described in IEEE/IEC/ISO 29148:2018.
  • 2+ years of experience in an organization with a strong nuclear safety culture (other OSHA compliant organizational cultures can be considered equivalent).
  • 2+ years of experience in an organization with classified or similarly controlled records.
  • Experience verifying compliance and testing the safety of Generative AI systems.
  • One or more prior projects leveraging retrieval augmented generation.
  • One or more prior projects leveraging the OpenAI API (or equivalent).
  • Ability to quantitatively demonstrate the value of AI solutions in service to a nuclear design organization.
  • Intuitive understanding of cloud computing (containerization, Kubernetes, etc.) and cloud networking (virtual networks, firewalls, etc.) in the Azure ecosystem.
