About the position

The AI Engineer position at Gonzaga University is focused on researching and developing AI software prototypes to support faculty, students, and community partners. This role is part of the Institute for Informatics and Applied Technology (IIAT) and aims to advance responsible AI practices in education and business operations. The engineer will work closely with the IIAT Director and other staff to enhance their knowledge and skills in AI technologies, contributing to innovative learning and teaching methods.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate and develop specialized AI systems for research, teaching, and business operations.
  • Independently develop custom AI technology prototypes that meet partner needs.
  • Assist partners in acquiring knowledge and skills to utilize and expand upon AI prototypes.
  • Proactively explore and attain specialized AI advances and technologies.
  • Apply technology advances to support partners' needs in research, teaching, and business operations.
  • Investigate advances in generative AI and report findings to the Director and staff.
  • Design AI exercises for experiential learning for diverse learners.
  • Collaborate to develop training exercises and materials for various stakeholders.
  • Supervise student assistants in AI Factory research and support their learning.
  • Assist the AI Factory Manager in managing the AI Factory's computing systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • 3-5 years of related experience in AI technologies.
  • Two years of technology development experience in AI.
  • Demonstrated ability for software prototyping.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to navigate in a higher education environment.

  • Experience in data curation/collection or data cleaning.
  • Ability to work with people across disciplines.
