About the position

The AI Modeling for Agriculture and Earth System Science Post-Doctoral Associate position at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities focuses on hybrid AI modeling and agroecosystem sustainability. The role involves collaboration with multiple funded projects from various agencies, including NASA and NSF, and aims to enhance the monitoring of cropland carbon budgets through advanced AI techniques and knowledge-guided machine learning models. The postdoctoral associate will also contribute to research publications and grant proposals while mentoring students in the lab.

Responsibilities

  • Apply advanced knowledge-guided AI-modeling techniques to monitor cropland carbon budgets.
  • Integrate multi-modal data including remote sensing and soil sampling into models.
  • Develop AI-ready benchmark datasets for earth ecosystem modeling.
  • Implement KGML-engaged frameworks to refine crop land carbon budget estimates.
  • Conduct simulations to validate models and methodologies at local, regional, and global scales.
  • Collaborate with the AI-CLIMATE institute to reduce uncertainties in national GHG inventories.
  • Lead or collaborate on research reports and peer-reviewed manuscripts for publication.
  • Participate in seminars and conferences as needed.
  • Provide training and mentorship to graduate and undergraduate students.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in a quantitative discipline such as Earth and atmospheric sciences, environmental science, hydrology, ecology, computer science, math, statistics, or related fields.
  • Strong programming experience in languages such as Python, Fortran, or C++ and familiarity with supercomputing or cloud platforms.
  • Experience with AI/deep learning, particularly in integrating physical models and AI algorithms.
  • Knowledge of process-based models and data assimilation techniques.
  • Excellent skills in data visualization and communication.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in large-scale ecosystem modeling or GHG inventory analysis.
  • Experience working on projects with policy or industry applications, particularly in agriculture.
  • Demonstrated ability to publish peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts and collaborate on interdisciplinary research teams.
  • Familiarity with uncertainty quantification and parameter calibration methods.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary range of $56,484.00 - $58,000.00
  • Opportunities for professional development and collaboration with leading researchers.
