About the position

The XR People Generation team at Meta is at the forefront of developing innovative communication technologies, specifically focusing on photorealistic telepresence through Codec Avatars. This role as an AI Research Scientist in Computer Vision involves collaborating closely with Reality Labs Research partners to create solutions that enable people to connect as if they were in the same room, despite physical distances. The team is dedicated to researching, developing, and productionizing cutting-edge methods that intersect computer graphics, computer vision, and machine learning, all aimed at enhancing human understanding and telepresence experiences. In this position, you will engage in applied research to develop novel and accurate AI algorithms and advanced systems tailored for large-scale applications. You will be responsible for managing large initiatives or multiple high-complexity projects, defining clear long-term objectives while also setting short and medium-term goals. Collaboration is key, as you will work with various cross-functional teams across both research and product domains. As a tech lead, you will provide technical research direction to your team and mentor fellow researchers, fostering an environment of growth and innovation. The role requires a significant coding component, estimated at 70%, with the remaining 30% dedicated to system design. You will leverage your expertise to drive algorithmic changes towards on-device optimization, ensuring that the research translates effectively into production. Your contributions will be pivotal in shaping the future of communication technology at Meta, as the company continues to push the boundaries of digital connection and immersive experiences.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct applied research and develop novel, accurate AI algorithms and advanced systems for large scale applications.
  • Work on large initiatives or multiple projects of high complexity/scope and define clear long term objectives with short and medium term goals.
  • Collaborate with different cross functional teams in research and product sides.
  • Give technical research direction to the team as tech lead.
  • Mentor other researchers in the team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or relevant technical field with 5+ years of experience.
  • Led XFN groups across research and product towards meeting experiential and engineering targets.
  • Track record of delivering research into production, driving algorithmic changes towards on-device optimization.
  • Experience developing computer vision and machine learning algorithms in C/C++ and/or Python/PyTorch.
  • Experience with training and evaluating generative modeling (GANs, diffusion).
  • Fundamentals of 3D machine learning and graphics.

Nice-to-haves

  • First-authored publications at peer-reviewed conferences (e.g. CVPR, ECCV, ICCV, NeurIPS, SIGGRAPH).
  • Experience solving complex problems and comparing alternative solutions, tradeoffs, and diverse points of view to determine a path forward towards bringing state-of-the-art approaches onto real world devices.
  • Experience working and communicating cross functionally in a team environment.
  • Experience in machine learning infra systems.
  • Experience with CPU/GPU and mobile optimization.
