About the position

The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) is seeking a full-time City Research Scientist IV to join the Bureau of Management Analysis & Planning. This role involves utilizing advanced analytical methods, including machine learning and artificial intelligence, to support decision-making processes within the department. The position requires collaboration with external partners and the development of innovative algorithms and models to enhance public safety services. The successful candidate will report directly to the Assistant Commissioner and will play a key role in mentoring team members and ensuring the quality of research methodologies.

Responsibilities

• Identify research areas based on organizational goals and trends.
• Ensure alignment of projects with organizational objectives.
• Establish and maintain collaborations with external partners, academic institutions, and industry stakeholders.
• Drive the development of cutting-edge algorithms, models, and techniques.
• Ensure the quality and rigor of research methodologies and results.
• Facilitate the transfer of research outcomes into real-world applications and products.
• Provide mentorship and foster a collaborative and innovative research environment.

Requirements

• A master's degree in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental science, or public health.
• At least two years of experience in a responsible research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization.
• Demonstrated ability in programming and logic with a good understanding of data requirements relating to applications design.

Nice-to-haves

• Advanced degree in Operations Research, Statistics, Computer Science, Management Science, or a related field.
• Expertise in statistical/simulation/optimization packages such as C#, Python, R, SAS, STATA.
• Management experience and strong people skills with a focus on customer service.
