About the position

We are a group of engineers and researchers responsible for building foundation models at Apple. Our team focuses on creating infrastructure, datasets, and models that possess fundamental general capabilities, including the understanding and generation of text, images, speech, videos, and other modalities. These models are then applied to enhance Apple products, aiming to push the boundaries of deep learning in terms of scaling, efficiency, and flexibility, ultimately delighting millions of users. In this role, you will collaborate with a close-knit and rapidly growing team of world-class engineers and scientists to tackle some of the most challenging problems in foundation models and deep learning. This includes areas such as natural language processing, multi-modal understanding, and the integration of learning with knowledge. You will have the opportunity to identify and develop novel applications of deep learning that can be integrated into Apple products. Your contributions will not only be recognized through publications but will also have a direct impact on improving the user experience for millions of Apple customers.

Responsibilities

• Build and deploy large-scale distributed systems for foundation models.
• Develop infrastructure and datasets for deep learning applications.
• Collaborate with engineers and scientists to solve complex problems in natural language processing and multi-modal understanding.
• Identify and create novel applications of deep learning in Apple products.
• Contribute to the publication of research findings and improvements in user experience.

Requirements

• Proven track record in training or deployment of large models.
• Experience in building large-scale distributed systems.
• Proficient programming skills in Python and familiarity with deep learning toolkits such as JAX, PyTorch, or TensorFlow.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with web-scale information retrieval.
• Knowledge of human-like conversation agents.
• Familiarity with multi-modal perception for existing products and future hardware platforms.
• Experience with on-device intelligence and learning with strong privacy protections.
• PhD or equivalent practical experience in Computer Science or a related technical field.
