About the position

As a Machine Learning Data Scientist in the Safety & Red Teaming team at Apple, you will play a crucial role in shaping the future of generative AI applications. This position is part of the Apple HCMI/Responsible AI group, where you will engage in innovative research and development focused on large language models (LLMs) and their applications in safety, robustness, and uncertainty. Your work will directly impact the quality of user-facing products by developing Responsible AI evaluation methods that enhance the performance and reliability of Apple's generative models. In this role, you will be responsible for creating evaluation datasets to address complex, non-routine analysis problems. You will apply sophisticated analytical methods to gather data, specify requirements, and conduct thorough analyses. Your ability to build and prototype analysis pipelines iteratively will be essential in providing insights at scale. You will also develop a deep understanding of data structures and metrics, advocating for necessary changes to improve product development processes. Collaboration is key in this position, as you will partner closely with engineering teams to refine core machine learning algorithms and systems that underpin various features. Your contributions will not only enhance existing products but also pave the way for future advancements in generative AI at Apple.

Responsibilities

  • Research and develop Responsible AI evaluation methods to improve the quality of Apple Intelligence's user-facing products.
  • Create evaluation datasets to solve difficult, non-routine analysis problems, applying sophisticated analytical methods as needed.
  • Conduct analyses that include data gathering and requirements specification, processing, analysis, ongoing work, and presentations.
  • Build and prototype analysis pipelines iteratively to provide insights at large scale.
  • Develop extensive knowledge of data structures and metrics, advocating for changes where needed for product development.
  • Partner closely with engineering teams on core machine learning algorithms and systems that are part of how features work.

Requirements

  • Strong background in machine learning and data science, particularly with large language models (LLMs).
  • Experience in developing evaluation methods for AI systems.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and the ability to create and manage datasets for complex analysis.
  • Familiarity with programming languages and tools commonly used in data science, such as Python, R, or similar.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with engineering teams and communicate complex ideas effectively.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with generative models for vision and language.
