About the position

The role involves working as a data scientist and engineer within Apple's HCMI/Responsible AI group, focusing on the development of generative AI applications. The position emphasizes research and development of Responsible AI evaluation methods, contributing to innovative machine learning projects that will impact Apple's products and the broader world. The candidate will tackle complex problems in machine learning, particularly with large generative models for vision and language, while ensuring safety, robustness, and uncertainty in models.

Responsibilities

  • Research and develop Responsible AI evaluation methods to enhance Apple Intelligence's user-facing products.
  • Create evaluation data sets to address complex, non-routine analysis problems using sophisticated analytical methods.
  • Conduct comprehensive analyses including data gathering, requirements specification, processing, and presentations.
  • Build and prototype analysis pipelines iteratively to provide insights at scale.
  • Develop extensive knowledge of data structures and metrics, advocating for necessary changes in product development.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering teams on core machine learning algorithms and systems.

Requirements

  • Strong programming skills, including data-querying skills (SQL and/or Spark) and experience with a scripting language for data processing (e.g., Python, R, or Scala).
  • Proficiency in data science, machine learning, and analytics, including statistical data analysis and A/B testing.
  • Experience in crafting, conducting, analyzing, and interpreting experiments and investigations.
  • Ability to articulate and answer business questions using statistical techniques applied to available data sources.
  • Experience in collecting and analyzing crowd-sourced data, language data, image data, and/or multi-modal data.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to explain complex technical topics to diverse audiences.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working in the Responsible AI space.
  • Experience dealing with highly multi-labeled, nuanced, and often conflicting data sources.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing requirements.
  • History of driving projects of varying sizes and scopes, managing ambiguity effectively.
  • Advanced degree or equivalent experience in a quantitative field such as Statistics, Operations Research, Bioinformatics, Cognitive Science, Economics, Linguistics, Psychology, Computer Science, Sociology, Mathematics, or Physics.
