About the position

The AIML Information Intelligence team at Apple is focused on developing innovative technologies in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and natural language processing. This role involves working on large-scale machine learning and deep learning projects to enhance query understanding and ranking for Apple's search features across various products, including Siri and Safari. The position requires collaboration with researchers and data scientists to create and refine domain-specific Large Language Models and to transition cutting-edge generative AI research into production-ready technologies.

Responsibilities

• Working on query understanding components such as intent classification, entity recognition, and entity linking.
• Analyzing query understanding issues and opportunities.
• Developing, fine-tuning, and evaluating domain-specific Large Language Models for various tasks and applications in Apple's AI-powered products.
• Conducting applied research to transfer cutting-edge research in generative AI to production-ready technologies.
• Understanding product requirements and translating them into modeling and engineering tasks.
• Building machine learning models for entity linking, intent classification, entity recognition, search relevance, ranking, and query understanding problems.
• Integrating search functions into Apple products, such as Siri, Spotlight, Safari, Messages, and Lookup.
• Building end-to-end production systems including query understanding and ranking to power search.
• Utilizing Spark, Hadoop MapReduce, Hive, and Impala for distributed data processing.

Requirements

• Experience in machine learning, deep learning, information retrieval, knowledge graphs, natural language processing, or data mining.
• Experience in prompt engineering, fine-tuning, evaluating, and developing data collection/annotation/management tooling for LLMs.
• Proficiency in one of the following programming languages: Python, Go, Java, or C++.
• Excellent knowledge and practical skills in major machine learning algorithms.
• Strong data analytical skills.
• Good interpersonal skills and ability to work as a team player.

Nice-to-haves

• MS or PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning, Information Retrieval, Data Science, or a related field.
