About the position

The Machine Learning Engineer and Researcher role at Apple’s AIML organization focuses on innovative research in machine learning to enhance data annotation and product evaluation processes. This position involves collaboration with a multidisciplinary team to develop machine-based grading models and automate quality assessments of data used in foundational models, ultimately impacting future Apple products and the broader ML ecosystem.

Responsibilities

• Apply innovative research in machine learning to tackle complex data annotation and product evaluation problems.
• Develop machine-based grading models to reduce annotation costs and turnaround time.
• Build pipelines to automate the assessment of data quality for training foundational models.
• Conduct research to improve data curation efficacy by identifying grading errors and biases.
• Uncover patterns in data using statistical and ML-based methods to model data distributions.
• Employ data selection techniques such as novelty detection and active learning for diverse data types.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience with developing and evaluating ML applications.
• Demonstrated experience in understanding and improving data quality.
• Experience writing automated unit, integration, and acceptance tests.
• Proficiency in database and SQL skills.
• B.S. in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Statistics, Operations Research or related areas.

Nice-to-haves

• Proven expertise in machine learning with a passion for model evaluation and applications.
• Experience with natural language processing (NLP) and large language models like BERT, GPT, or Transformers.
• Strong programming skills in Python, PyTorch, or Jax.
• Demonstrated publication record in relevant conferences (e.g. ACL, EMNLP, NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR).
• Ph.D. in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Statistics, Operations Research or related areas.
