About the position

The Air Traffic Control Specialist position at the Department of Defense involves overseeing and managing air traffic operations to ensure the safe and efficient movement of aircraft. The role requires issuing clearances, interpreting aviation procedures, and developing training programs for air traffic controllers. The specialist will also be responsible for maintaining proficiency standards and conducting training assessments.

Responsibilities

  • Issue clearances and traffic information to aircraft arriving, departing, or operating within the traffic area.
  • Interpret established DoD, FAA, International Civil Aviation Organization, and other aviation procedures and documents.
  • Develop, maintain, and administer standardized ATC training programs according to Department of Army and FAA guidelines.
  • Plan, establish, and oversee a continuing proficiency development program for ATC facilities.
  • Provide developmental, proficiency, and remedial training as required, maintaining training records accordingly.
  • Assign study assignments and administer exams to ensure proficiency is maintained.

Requirements

  • Must be able to undergo a Class IV Flight Physical pre-employment and annual physical evaluation.
  • Must obtain and maintain an FAA CTO certification.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening and random testing.
  • Ability to climb an air traffic control tower at least 146 steps/120 feet in height.
  • Experience in a military or civilian air traffic facility with knowledge of air traffic control laws, rules, and regulations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in issuing control instructions and advice to pilots.
  • Experience in directing and coordinating aircraft in assigned airspace.
