About the position

The Air Traffic Control Specialist (Terminal) position at Tyndall AFB, Florida, is primarily responsible for providing visual flight rules (VFR) air traffic control services to military and civilian aircraft. This role ensures the safe, orderly, and efficient flow of air traffic in the vicinity of the airport and within the controlled movement area of the airfield. The specialist will control aircraft operations, observe and report critical information, and assist in training air traffic control personnel while maintaining certification requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Provide VFR air traffic control services to aircraft in the vicinity of the airport.
  • Control military and civilian aircraft in a control tower environment.
  • Observe and report airport advisories, critical weather information, and equipment outages.
  • Provide instruction and assistance to air traffic control personnel.
  • Maintain certification requirements.

Requirements

  • At least one year of specialized experience at the GS-09 level or equivalent in other pay systems.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of air traffic control laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Ability to act decisively under stressful situations and maintain alertness over sustained periods.
  • Skill to coordinate plans and actions with pilots and other controllers.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a military or civilian air traffic facility.
  • Knowledge of Terminal Air Traffic Control (ATC) Procedures.
  • Ability to make rapid and precise judgments in real-time work situations.
