About the position

The Aircraft Mechanic Inspector position is a journeyman level role within the Department of the Interior's Office of Aviation Services, located in Anchorage, Alaska. The incumbent is responsible for performing maintenance, inspections, repairs, and alterations on the DOI's certificated light piston powered fleet aircraft. This includes ensuring airworthiness and compliance with FAA regulations, as well as conducting operational testing and diagnostics on aircraft systems.

Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance, preventative maintenance, repair, alteration, and airworthiness return to service on DOI certificated light piston powered fleet aircraft.
  • Conduct periodic maintenance, 100-hour/annual inspections, and alterations on certified light general aviation piston powered aircraft operated by DOI.
  • Inspect and approve work completed by other service mechanics in accordance with FAA and DOI regulations.
  • Diagnose deficiencies in aircraft airworthiness or performance and interact with pilots to understand aircraft problems.
  • Evaluate the effect of repairs and alterations on aircraft structures and systems.
  • Perform all phases of aircraft structural repair and alterations, including various materials and structures.
  • Rig and adjust aircraft components to specifications, including engines and control systems.
  • Trace and correct electrical problems in aircraft systems and understand basic electrical circuitry.

Requirements

  • Must possess a current FAA Mechanic Certificate with Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) Rating and current Inspection Authorization (IA) privileges or be qualified and willing to obtain an IA within 6 months of employment.
  • Thorough familiarity with applicable regulations and inspection methods as per 14 CFR 145.
  • Ability to inspect incoming aircraft and components to verify discrepancies and determine repair requirements.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with various aircraft systems and components.
  • Familiarity with Department of Transportation and FAA publications.
