About the position

The Airport Engineering Technician V position involves performing skilled technical and moderately complex engineering tasks related to drafting, design, surveying, materials testing, construction inspection, and pavement management. The role requires independent judgment and technical knowledge to manage projects, coordinate with various stakeholders, and lead technical personnel. The incumbent may also specialize in complex computer applications and is expected to adapt to changing workloads and assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Acts as lead person of technical personnel engaged in complex technical specialties and engineering projects.
  • Reviews and approves various developments, projects, and permit applications.
  • Prepares plans and specifications for major projects using computer applications.
  • Independently interprets plans and specifications to resolve complex construction problems.
  • Schedules construction and maintenance work, coordinating with utility companies and city departments.
  • Conducts field inspections on a variety of engineering construction projects.
  • Monitors contractors' construction progress and resolves complex construction problems.
  • Maintains detailed records and prepares written reports on project status and issues.
  • Motivates, evaluates, and trains employees within the unit.
  • Represents Salt Lake City Corporation in meetings with other agencies and contractors.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent.
  • Eight years of progressively responsible work experience related to design and construction/materials inspection, with one year of lead person experience.
  • Technical training and certification from an engineering technical association or accredited educational institution.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of modern techniques, technology, equipment, and engineering software applications.
  • Ability to prepare and present written and oral reports on complex projects.

Nice-to-haves

  • Proficient in reading and interpreting construction specifications and technical drawings.
  • Familiarity with air-side and land-side airport civil projects.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite or similar programs.
  • Knowledge of construction safety practices.
