About the position

The ALARA Specialist is responsible for reviewing work documents and plans to ensure compliance with radiation safety standards. This role involves proposing improvements in work methods, conducting pre-job planning, and maintaining the Radiation Work Permit Program. The specialist will track radiation exposure, establish radiological work requirements, and communicate effectively across various work groups to enhance safety and efficiency in nuclear operations.

Responsibilities

  • Review work documents and associated work plans.
  • Determine special work requirements and incorporate them into work documents.
  • Propose time-saving tooling and work methods.
  • Conduct pre-job planning meetings.
  • Develop and revise procedures in accordance with current regulatory and administrative requirements.
  • Enhance communications by performing a liaison function between various work groups.
  • Maintain the Radiation Work Permit Program.
  • Track radiation exposure for personnel and work tasks.
  • Determine methods to reduce radiation exposure.
  • Establish worker stay times and radiological work requirements.
  • Perform work in progress and post-job reviews for inclusion into job history files.
  • Organize, assemble, and maintain job history files to aid in future planning and estimating.
  • Propose plant design changes that improve station and personnel efficiency and reduce exposure.
  • Perform cost-benefit analysis to evaluate tools, equipment, and processes for potential implementation.
  • Interface with regulatory and industry representatives on behalf of station activities.
  • Communicate technical information, concepts, and ideas verbally and in writing.
  • Participate in the shared resources program.
  • Serve as a member of the Emergency Response Organization.
  • Establish and track departmental and station goals in the areas of radiation exposure.
  • Complete TEDE/ALARA reviews.
  • Identify and incorporate industry lessons learned, operating experiences, and INPO good practices into radiological job coverage documents.
  • Prepare, install, and remove Temporary Shielding Packages.
  • Communicate with all levels of the organization and represent the RP department at station meetings.
  • Ensure all radiological activities are performed within regulatory and procedural requirements.
  • Represent the RP department in the online and outage work planning processes.
  • Perform station work schedule reviews to determine radiological risk of any RCA work.
  • Review Station temporary alterations, modifications, or engineering changes for ALARA/dose impacts.

Requirements

  • B.S. Degree in Engineering or related technical degree, or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum of 6 years commercial or military nuclear experience.
  • At least 5 years experience in the associated department (desired).
  • At least 2 years in the ALARA field (highly desired).
  • Technical proficiency in the assigned area.
  • Technical understanding of nuclear generation principles and operation.
  • Proficiency with current computer business applications (highly desired).
  • High level proficiency with Microsoft Office products, INDUS Asset Suite, and Sentinel Radiation Protection Management software (highly desired).
  • Familiarity with Primavera Project Management (P-6) scheduling software (highly desired).
  • SRO certification on BWR or PWR (desired).
  • ANSI 3.1 Qualified Senior RP technician (highly desired).
  • National Registry of Radiation Protection practitioner status certification (highly desired).
