About the position

The AJC's mission is to be the most essential and engaging source of news and information for the people of Atlanta, Georgia, and the South. To achieve this mission, the AJC is transforming from a storied daily newspaper into a modern media company. This transformation involves a diverse team of reporters, product experts, video/audio specialists, and digital professionals delivering content across various creative platforms and industries. The AM ATL Newsletter Writer will be responsible for writing and producing the AJC's flagship morning newsletter, A.M. ATL. This newsletter is a concise, 5-minute skimmable read that focuses on elevating conversational, geographically centered news that Atlantans can use, share, react to, and act upon each day. The writer will work closely with the Newsletter Editor and senior leadership to ensure that the newsletter reflects the priorities of the AJC's existing and prospective users through smart commentary and curation. The ideal candidate will possess a strong voice and a commitment to building community through the newsletter, ideally with established community relationships. They will be dedicated to crafting compelling subject lines and curating the right content mix. The role requires reliability, collaboration, and flexibility as the AJC continues its digital transformation. Writing and producing the daily newsletter will involve reporting, art selection, collecting user-generated content, and utilizing an email and content management system.

Responsibilities

  • Writing original content for the AJC's daily flagship morning newsletter in an authentically Atlanta voice.
  • Curating the need-to-know stories of the day across various sections and news arcs.
  • Collaborating with reporters, editors, and programming team members to find the best reader hooks.
  • Creating additional content under the A.M. ATL brand, such as emergency news briefings.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree preferably in journalism or a related field.
  • At least 6 years of experience as a digital producer in a fast-paced operational role, or a combination of education and experience such as a master's degree with 4+ years' experience, a Ph.D. with 1+ years of experience, or 10 years' experience in a related field.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a strong understanding of news judgment and journalism ethics.
  • Ability to take constructive criticism.
  • Passion for local, regional, and statewide journalism as a societal change agent.
  • Familiarity and experience in using audience metrics.
  • Reliable automobile transportation required.
  • Reliable internet service for remote work environment required.
  • Ability to work weekends and unusual hours as dictated by news events.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in newspapers, magazines, media, technology, or a related field.
  • Experience working in a breaking news environment.
  • Experience in social, interactive, or digital media.
