About the position

The Ambulatory Clinic RN in Family Medicine at KU MedWest is responsible for delivering high-quality nursing care in an outpatient setting. This role requires the RN to utilize the nursing process effectively, demonstrating accountability and independent judgment in patient care. The RN will assess and interpret patient data, ensuring that care is tailored to meet the age-specific needs of each patient. The position involves direct patient care, preliminary assessments, and collaboration with the healthcare team to facilitate appropriate follow-up and interventions. The RN will also be responsible for educating patients and their families about health care needs, evaluating the effectiveness of this education, and documenting outcomes in patient charts. The role requires the RN to respond to patient inquiries, complete necessary forms, and maintain a high standard of care in accordance with established protocols and resources. The RN must be adaptable, as duties may vary depending on departmental needs, and other responsibilities may be assigned as required.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct patient care within the ambulatory setting, based on the nursing process and within role/scope of practice.
  • Performs preliminary assessment of patients through observation and chart review to facilitate appropriate follow-up with the healthcare team.
  • Evaluates unstable or complex patient care situations and facilitates appropriate intervention.
  • Implements appropriate clinical decisions and demonstrates appropriate use of expert peers and/or management as applicable.
  • Accepts accountability and uses independent nursing judgment for care provided by self and by healthcare providers to whom care is delegated.
  • Demonstrates the appropriate use of standards, effective use of resources and evaluation of patient response in the delivery of patient care.
  • Identifies teach/learning needs of patient.
  • Responsible for educational instruction to patients and families with health care needs.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of patient and family teaching and makes documentation in patient's charts.
  • Responds to/refers incoming patient treatment-related phone calls.
  • Completes necessary forms (i.e. FMLA, DME, Home Health orders and obtains physicians signatures as appropriate).

Requirements

  • High School Graduate
  • Associate Degree in Nursing
  • 6 months of RN experience
  • 2 or more years RN experience to be an Ambulatory Clinic RN PRN
  • Licensed Registered Nurse (LRN) - Multi-State - State Board of Nursing with current active multistate state Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing in state of residence or active single state RN license in good standing in the state of work with proof of application for a multistate RN license.
  • Basic Life Support Heartsaver (BLS HS) certification from American Heart Association (AHA) or obtained within 14 days.
