About the position

The Ambulatory Clinic RN in Urgent Care at The University of Kansas Health System is a full-time position that requires a dedicated and skilled registered nurse to provide high-quality patient care in an ambulatory setting. The RN will work four 10-hour shifts from 11 AM to 9 PM, ensuring that patients receive comprehensive nursing care based on the nursing process. This role involves accepting accountability for the delivery of nursing care, utilizing competent clinical knowledge, and exercising independent nursing judgment to achieve optimal patient outcomes. The RN will assess and interpret patient data, taking into consideration the age-specific needs of each patient, and will be responsible for the preliminary assessment of patients through observation and chart review. In this position, the RN will evaluate complex patient care situations and facilitate appropriate interventions, demonstrating the ability to implement clinical decisions effectively. The RN will also be responsible for identifying the teaching and learning needs of patients and their families, providing educational instruction, and evaluating the effectiveness of this teaching. Additionally, the RN will respond to patient treatment-related phone calls, complete necessary forms, and ensure that all documentation is accurately maintained in patient charts. This role requires a commitment to professional development and the ability to perform clinical competencies specific to the assigned unit or department. The RN will work collaboratively with the healthcare team to ensure that all patient care is delivered in accordance with established standards and protocols, making use of available resources to enhance patient care delivery. This position is essential in maintaining the quality of care and ensuring that patients receive the support they need throughout their treatment journey.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct patient care within the ambulatory setting, based on the nursing process and within role/scope of practice.
  • Performs preliminary assessment of patients through observation and chart review to facilitate appropriate follow-up with the healthcare team.
  • Evaluates unstable or complex patient care situations and facilitates appropriate intervention.
  • Implements appropriate clinical decisions and demonstrates appropriate use of expert peers and/or management as applicable.
  • Accepts accountability and uses independent nursing judgment for care provided by self and by healthcare providers to whom care is delegated.
  • Demonstrates the appropriate use of standards, effective use of resources and evaluation of patient response in the delivery of patient care.
  • Identifies teach/learning needs of patient and is responsible for educational instruction to patients and families with health care needs.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of patient and family teaching and makes documentation in patient's charts.
  • Responds to/refers incoming patient treatment-related phone calls.
  • Completes necessary forms (i.e. FMLA, DME, Home Health orders) and obtains physicians signatures as appropriate.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate
  • Associate Degree in Nursing
  • 6 months of RN experience
  • 2 or more years RN experience to be an Ambulatory Clinic RN PRN
  • Licensed Registered Nurse (LRN) - Multi-State - State Board of Nursing
  • Current active multistate state Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing in state of residence or active single state RN license in good standing in the state of work with proof of application for multistate RN license.
  • Basic Life Support Heartsaver (BLS HS) certification (Non-Clinical) - American Heart Association (AHA) or obtained within 14 days.
