About the position

The Sign Language Interpreter will facilitate effective communication between deaf and hearing individuals, primarily in an educational setting. This role is crucial for ensuring clear communication, particularly for an elementary student, and involves interpreting spoken language into American Sign Language (ASL) and vice versa. The interpreter will work closely with the student and other professionals to provide appropriate services while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.

Responsibilities

• Interpret spoken language into American Sign Language (ASL) for deaf individuals during school.
• Translate ASL back into spoken language for hearing individuals to ensure mutual understanding.
• Communicate effectively with the student to assess their needs and provide appropriate interpreting services.
• Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times while interpreting sensitive information.
• Collaborate with other interpreters and professionals to enhance service delivery.
• Stay updated on best practices in interpreting and participate in ongoing professional development.

Requirements

• Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) is required; additional languages are a plus.
• Strong background in linguistics or related fields is preferred.
• Previous experience as a sign language interpreter is highly desirable.
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal, with the ability to convey complex concepts clearly.
• Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
• Must be adaptable to different environments and able to handle varying levels of communication needs.
