About the position

The American Sign Language Interpreter will provide interpretation services primarily within the State of Arizona, focusing on various sectors including education, legal, medical, environmental, and social services. This role is essential for facilitating effective communication between deaf individuals and the community, ensuring that all duties align with the mission and values of Cayuse Civil, LLC.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately interpreting spoken work situations like lectures, conversations, and meetings
  • Translating American Sign Language into English
  • Working with an organization's faculty to better facilitate communication with deaf members of the community
  • Collaborating with other ASL Interpreters
  • Utilizing technology to transcribe spoken English in some settings
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Degree or BA Degree or equivalent in years of experience
  • 5+ years of experience
  • Registry of Interpretation for Deaf (RID), Board of evaluation of Interpretation certification program (BEI), World Association of Sign Language Interpreters certification
  • Demonstrated experience in providing auxiliary aids and services to facilitate effective communication for people with disabilities, including people who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Deaf-Blind
  • Experience in Language Liaison, Education, Medical, Environmental, or Military Interpretation
  • Comfortable interpreting for organizations like NBCMI, DSHS, CHI, Federal courts, and others
  • Assigned interpreters certified or qualified by Oregon Court Certification program, Oregon Health Authority, or Oregon Health Care Interpreter Program
  • Experience interpreting for Metro or other jurisdictions in Oregon
  • Experience in specialized vocabularies (i.e., legal, performing arts, cultural)
  • Fluency in one or more languages such as Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese, Russian, Arabic, Hindi, Hmong, Japanese, Khmer, Korean, Lao, Nepali, Persian, Romanian, Somali, Tagalog, Telugu, Thai, or Ukrainian
  • Ability to pass a background check.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft and Adobe toolsets, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Acrobat
  • Strong social awareness for interpretation with empathy and attentiveness
  • Ability to track and remember information and concepts while simultaneously interpreting them
  • Physical stamina and dexterity for extended interpretation sessions
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Highly motivated with the ability to handle and manage multiple tasks.
