About the position

The American Sign Language Video Interpreter is responsible for facilitating communication between American Sign Language (ASL) and English speakers through video interpreting sessions. This remote position requires the interpreter to handle calls on demand across various industries, ensuring accurate and culturally sensitive interpretation while maintaining professionalism and courtesy at all times.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to video interpreting sessions promptly and conduct interpretation in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Participate in online, video, and audio training sessions.
  • Deliver interpretation services via video and expediently type data on a company-provided device, such as a laptop.
  • Render correct concepts and meanings according to established interpretation protocol, avoiding omissions or additions.
  • Interpret clearly in both languages using proper pronunciation, enunciation, and polite expressions.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor throughout the video interpreting sessions.
  • Remain calm during video interpreting sessions, especially in emergency situations such as 911 calls.
  • Maintain punctuality and availability during scheduled work hours.
  • Follow client instructions to ensure client expectations are met with the Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing (D/HH) individual.
  • Understand protocol and terminology for various industries including Medical, Insurance, Finance, and Law.
  • Demonstrate commitment to cultural sensitivity and working in a diverse environment.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and English.
  • Experience in video interpreting or related field is preferred.
  • Ability to handle high-stress situations and maintain professionalism.
  • Strong understanding of cultural differences and sensitivity.
  • Familiarity with industry-specific terminology in Medical, Insurance, Finance, and Law.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous experience in a remote interpreting role.
  • Knowledge of additional languages is a plus.
