About the position

The Ammonia Refrigeration Technician is responsible for the operation, testing, troubleshooting, and repair of ammonia-based refrigeration systems, HVAC units, and boiler and hot water systems. This role requires extensive knowledge of these systems and adherence to safety and environmental regulations. The technician must work effectively both independently and as part of a team, ensuring compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Process Safety Management (PSM) standards.

Responsibilities

  • Operation, testing, troubleshooting and repair of the ammonia-based refrigeration system and its sub-systems.
  • Operation, testing, troubleshooting and repair of rack-mounted, stand-alone gas refrigerant HVAC units.
  • Operation, testing, troubleshooting and repair of boiler and hot water systems and their sub-systems.
  • Perform preventive maintenance (PM) on refrigeration, HVAC, boiler and hot water systems.
  • Maintain the material integrity of engine and utility rooms according to best practices.
  • Rebuild ammonia, HVAC, boiler and hot water system components following technical manuals.
  • Complete all applicable documentation related to job performance, including PSM modifications and Work Orders (WO's).
  • Adhere to Environmental Management Systems/ISO 14001 practices and procedures.
  • Participate in monthly training on PSM Standard Operating Procedures and tri-annual instructor-led training on Ammonia Systems.
  • Conduct daily rounds and inspections of temperatures and conditions of the ammonia system.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Plant engineer or supervisor.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 3 to 5 years of related experience and/or training in ammonia refrigeration systems, HVAC, and boiler systems.
  • Basic knowledge of General Maintenance and Electrical and Electronic Systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certificates in Ammonia Refrigeration Operator I, II, or III (not required).
  • PSM/RMP certification meeting OSHA Standard 29CFR 1910.119.
