About the position

The Analyst - Database Support position at Avangrid Service Company is crucial for providing support to the AVANGRID Energy Control Systems (ECS), which are essential for the operation of Electric Transmission and Distribution Systems as well as Backoffice applications. This role involves supporting the design, development, and testing of functional requirements for various systems including the Electric Management System (EMS), Outage Management System (OMS), Transmission Network Analysis (TNA) systems, and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. The Analyst will be responsible for documenting all database system design, maintenance, and enhancement work, ensuring that all processes are well recorded and can be referenced in the future. In addition to documentation, the Analyst will proactively monitor and maintain all database and application systems to ensure uninterrupted service to the Energy Control Center (ECC). This includes analyzing, extracting, and making available system data for engineers upon request. The position requires a strong technical background, particularly in Oracle database administration, including experience with Oracle 19c, 12c, and 11g, as well as familiarity with Oracle Real Application Cluster (RAC), ASM technology, and Oracle DataGuard. The Analyst will also utilize various database utilities such as Oracle Data Pump, RMAN, and SQL Loader, and should possess knowledge of database programming languages like SQLPlus and PL/SQL. The role demands good communication skills, both written and oral, as the Analyst will need to make sound decisions in high-pressure situations, especially during storm or emergency conditions requiring 24-hour system support. The ability to work independently and proactively contribute to results is essential. Prior experience in the electric utility sector or similar industries is advantageous, as is familiarity with industry compliance regulations and policies such as NERC-CIP. The position may also require the Analyst to be on call for database and systems support activities, emphasizing the need for flexibility and readiness to respond to urgent issues as they arise.

Responsibilities

  • Provide support for AVANGRID Energy Control Systems (ECS) used to operate Electric Transmission & Distribution Systems and Backoffice applications.
  • Support systems design, development, and testing of functional requirements for EMS, OMS, TNA systems, and SCADA systems.
  • Document all database system design, maintenance, and enhancement work.
  • Proactively monitor and maintain all database and application systems for uninterrupted service to the Energy Control Center (ECC).
  • Analyze, extract, and make available system data for engineers on request.
  • Be on call for database and systems support activity.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree with 2+ years in RDBMS experience
  • Associate Degree with 4+ years in RDBMS experience
  • 5-7 years' IT and RDBMS related experience
  • Experience in Oracle database administration in Oracle 19c, 12c, and 11g.
  • Experience in administering Oracle Real Application Cluster (RAC), ASM technology, and Oracle DataGuard.
  • Experience in the use of database utilities like Oracle Data Pump, RMAN, Oracle Imp/Exp, and/or SQL Loader.
  • Knowledge of database programming, SQLPlus, and PL/SQL, Materialized views, Triggers, using Database Change Notification.
  • General knowledge in using/working on virtual environments.
  • Good knowledge/understanding of network communication and services.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of Shell Scripting, Python, C, or Java Script is desirable.
  • Experience in database tuning and SQL tuning for applications is a plus.
  • Experience working with RedHat Enterprise Linux and/or Oracle Solaris UNIX is a plus.
  • Experience working with Exadata Servers and/or Oracle Linux on Exadata Servers is a plus.
