About the position

CIBC is seeking an experienced equity analyst to join our Equity team, focusing on the industrial and business services sectors. This role is pivotal in supporting our internal equity investment strategies, which are centered around Equity Income and Growth, managing assets under management (AUM) exceeding $10 billion. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting thorough research and analysis of the industrial and business services sectors, contributing to our long-term investment strategies that emphasize quality and sustainability. As part of a larger Equity team managing $40 billion in assets, the analyst will provide critical insights and analysis to support various internally managed strategies. Our investment approach is characterized by a long-term orientation, aiming to deliver attractive returns while maintaining a focus on quality investments. In this role, you will be expected to provide comprehensive equity analysis on the industrial and business services sectors, researching and analyzing market data, industry trends, and relevant filings to formulate and support investment theses. You will develop strategic analyses of companies, offering fresh investment insights to the portfolio management team. Effective communication is key, as you will need to articulate the rationale behind company recommendations and broader sector themes to portfolio managers. Additionally, you will actively monitor companies under your coverage, ensuring timely communication of significant changes, and maintain concise investment thesis summaries on sector companies. Your contributions will include generating a steady flow of well-thought-out new investment ideas, modeling company financials, and applying relevant valuation metrics. Collaboration with the Equity team is essential, as you will recommend position changes within strategy guidelines and provide analytical support to team members. You will also respond to requests from Relationship Managers and document rationales for investment decisions on our internal portal, leveraging your network of company officers through frequent face-to-face meetings with management.

Responsibilities

  • Provide equity analysis on industrial and business services sectors for the Equity Income and Growth teams.
  • Research and analyze market data, industry trends, filings, and all other necessary data to formulate and support investment theses.
  • Develop clear, strategic analysis of companies that provides fresh investment insights to portfolio management team.
  • Communicate rationale for company recommendations to portfolio managers, as well as sector themes and broader investment insights.
  • Actively monitor companies under coverage and communicate important changes in a timely manner.
  • Maintain brief investment thesis summaries on sector companies.
  • Provide a flow of well thought out new investment ideas for our strategies.
  • Model company financials and apply applicable valuation metrics.
  • Work closely as part of the Equity team to recommend position changes within strategies under strategy guidelines and investment process.
  • Provide analytical and other support to investment team members.
  • Provide input in response to Relationship Manager requests.
  • Write rationales for purchases and sales and post on internal portal.
  • Leverage your network of company officers and other sources while conducting frequent face-to-face meetings with company management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree required; CFA designation is an asset.
  • Minimum of 5 years US equity analysis and/or relevant industry experience, preferably in the industrials/services sector.
  • Knowledge of sector and industry trends, competitive issues, fundamentals, and individual companies.
  • Strong analytical capabilities and demonstrated investment success.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and leverage strong problem-solving skills.
  • Open-minded, flexible, and willing to listen to others' opinions.
  • Ability to prioritize work, provide sound advice, and meet deadlines in a demanding work environment.
  • Ability to communicate detailed information in a meaningful way.
